Swept Under The Rug: The Magdalene Laundries of Ireland

Dura Lex, Sed Lex Season 1 Episode 6

This weeks episode is going to be about something that many of you might not have heard about.. it’s almost as if these crimes were indeed swept under the rug. We are gonna be discussing the Magdalene Laundries of Ireland, which started sometime in the 1800s and continued until the late 90s early 2000s. During these times women, who were considered „broken“ or „promiscuous", were taken in by the Catholic Church to redeem themselves and choose a „better path“. I think we all know what this means. But how did this exactly happen? What work did these women have to do? And why exactly does no one know about these crimes besides people in Ireland? That is what we will be discussing in this weeks episode. So sit down, relax and enjoy us talking about the Magdalene Laundries! Also if this episode indeed peaked your interest, then you should really check out a documentary by Irish Filmmaker Steven O‘Riordan called "The Forgotten Maggies“, it again showcases what we have talked about today in a bit greater detail. See you on the next one guys.
